Take 30 Seconds to Make Legal Access More Affordable in New York

New York has a unique $50-per-hour fee that members must pay on top of their plan when they need help with things like an eviction, a divorce, or an IRS letter. That extra cost stops many families from getting help early — and small problems turn into big ones.

This fix costs the state nothing. It just removes a barrier that exists nowhere else in the country — and gives working families the legal help they've already paid for.

The good news: this fee could soon be history. Senator Jeremy Cooney already passed a bill through the State Senate to eliminate it. Assemblymember Charles Lavine has introduced the same bill — A.8006 — in the Assembly. Now it needs to move out of the Insurance Committee before the full Assembly can vote. That vote could happen as soon as May.
