Take 30 Seconds to Make Legal Access More Affordable in New York

In every other state, if you have a prepaid legal plan, you can use it freely. Not in New York.

New York has a unique $50-per-hour fee that members must pay on top of their plan when they need help with things like an eviction, a divorce, or an IRS letter. That extra cost stops many families from getting help early — and small problems turn into big ones.

This fix costs the state nothing. It just removes a barrier that exists nowhere else in the country — and gives working families the legal help they've already paid for.

The good news: this fee could soon be history. Senator Jeremy Cooney already passed a bill through the State Senate to eliminate it. Assemblymember Charles Lavine has introduced the same bill — A.8006 — in the Assembly. Now it needs to move out of the Insurance Committee before the full Assembly can vote. That vote could happen as soon as May. Insurance Committee Chairman David Weprin can make that happen — and your message to your Assemblymember helps show that real New Yorkers want this to move forward.
